Men...The Experience

Men The Experience opened this past spring, but I waited until it had been running several weeks before checking it out. Since there are always plenty of early reviewers, I sometimes like to give a new production a little time before I blog about it.

The venue, the Riviera Hotel & Casino, is a Las Vegas landmark to anyone who knows this town. The "Riv" which opened in 1955, will celebrate its 60th Anniversary next year.

"We try to give the customer a fun, adult experience while
still keeping it classy. The business of male entertainment is
changing and evolving, and our show is a reflection of that."
- A.J. Trunk

This is a stage show, by and large, but when they did come down into the audience I can attest it was tastefully playful. The show kicks off with Give it 2 U, (Alan Thicke), showing right away that these guys can really dance! So, with that being my first impression I was pleased to see it carry into the rest of the night.

Of course there were plenty of costumes, it goes with the territory, and a couple of dance numbers and songs that have a place in probably every male dance revue in the country, including It's Raining Men…Some things are a tradition for a reason though, we women like to imagine it's raining men, (it makes us giggle)!

One of the guys dance solos to Usher's Scream was explosive, and my friend and I loved the red jeans with high tops, (and of course no shirt)....Another solo dance to Bon Jovi's  Wanted, Dead or Alive was a hit for all of us classic rock lovers and the dancer’s bad boy style with chaps and bandana were different enough to be interesting without trying too hard.

This is the first I ever remember seeing body art,  (on a few of the male dancers), but it wasn't over the top, and on some of the guys, it fit their look, so the personal expression was a plus.

There was a humorous game show scene that was reminded me of something out of MAD TV. I appreciate that these guys get it that ladies like a sense of humor!

The gangster number was high energy and the swing style dancing was a hit, however, I thought it could lose some of the machine gun simulations. As is common in these shows a couple of volunteers went onstage, one for a dual dance to Sum 41's Scotty Doesn't Know and the other for the game show sequence….They were returned to their seats blushing, but otherwise unharmed.

People tend to think of male revues only as bachelorette party entertainment, but watching this one it hit me that it's actually a great beginning for any night out in Vegas. On that note, I saw that men were also welcome.

Much of the show's overall look and sound is similar to what most of us know, but there is something more to these men. Individually and as a group they are charming, sweet, and talented dancers. By that I mean artists. They put as much passion into their show as I've seen on any Vegas stage.

Who are they?....A.J., Kaleb, Julian, Alejandro, and Babae

The Leader of the Pecs

Emcee and front man A.J. Trunk's style as emcee is warm, inviting, and at times humorous without being over the top. He is media savvy, having been in the business for over a decade and having performed all over the country, but also seems genuinely down to earth.
Having been in the business for several years, A.J. has seen it all, and knew going in what he wanted Men The Experience, to be.

"When creating this show I wanted us to be able to express ourselves through our dance, acting, humor and personalities...and to create an atmosphere of high energy and sexy fun.  In that way we're breaking new ground with "Men The Experience." A.J., Co-Creator

A.J. Trunk
I asked him if he's approached a lot by guys who want to get into exotic dancing. A.J. said yep, and that he tells them first and foremost that to be in this business a guy has to like and respect women, and not just the "hot" ones, but all of them…from 19 to 95!

On top of that a male dancer has to be willing to work out pretty hard almost every day. Physical perfection is the standard, and nothing less. That's just the way the business is. Dancing is hard work and a serious career, if you want it to last. The rewards are obvious, but in addition to that the feeling that you're making a lady smile, laugh, feel good and maybe forget about her problems for an hour or two is just as important.

When asked about life off stage A.J. went on to tell me that all their real lives are pretty interesting, a little weird at times because crazy things happen in this business, a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun. (Sounds like a reality show, only better.)

Male Dancing goes Hollywood...

Over the years there have been plenty of feature films and documentaries about female exotic dancers such as Showgirls, Strip Tease, and Night at the Blue Iguana, but really none about men, until recently.

Male exotic dancing has now gone more mainstream due to recent films such as the Steven Soderbergh directed  "Magic Mike", and now "La Bare", the documentary just released and directed by Joe Manganiello (of True Blood and Magic Mike), along with his brother Nick Manganiello.

Joe Manganiello
Joe invested his own money in the film to produce La Bare. "It's raw, but it's not what you'd expect. Everybody has this misconception about male entertainment, and they have no idea what they're talking about. That's why I made the film. No one had ever explored this, and people had just kind of sat back and had assumptions about it," said Joe.

Also, Ben stiller is now confirmed to star in a film about the business, but unlike many of his other projects, this one is not a comedy. It’s the story of Nick DeNoia, choreographer of one of the first and most famous male dance groups ever and the scandal and murder that plagued the operation. Currently in pre production, the feature is expected to be released in 2016.

Last but of course not least, the sequel to Magic Mike, the film, "Magic Mike XXL," where the guys go on a road trip, is expected to begin production soon and be released in 2015.

Back in Vegas...

Las Vegas is at the forefront of entertainment when it comes to variety and trends, and in a town with so much offered in every genre, it can take a lot to stand out.  With a dance revue, people don't just want to see bodies moving onstage, they want to feel a connection with the performers. With "Men," they do.

To entertain in the true sense of the word, is to combine talent with a personal touch. To care that each of the audience members are having a truly good time, and that these guys do...in spades.

Local Cast is making "Divorce" a Hit on The Strip

UPDATE....just found out this show is ending its run in Vegas on June 19 to go on tour. Catch it through June 19 in Las Vegas or look for it on the road after, it may have an upcoming showing in your town!

This show is sexy, fun and fast paced...just like the center of the strip where it plays.

Divorce Party The Musical opened on the strip this spring, and is generating heat with its hilarious musical parodies and sizzling Las Vegas based cast. After the show I went backstage for a little divorce party after party to get to know this delightful and high energy cast a little bit better…and ended up making five new friends!

Divorce Party The Musical was written by Amy Botwinick, who authored two books on surviving divorce after she went through a three year “drama trauma” herself. The show debuted in her home state of Florida, had runs in various cities and now has a home in Las Vegas at Windows at Ballys.

“When we brought the show here, because of my knowledge of the Las Vegas talent base, I insisted on an all local ensemble.  With award winning industry professional Troy Heard as casting director, we were fortunate to find the family we were able to create.”

- Jennifer Young, Producer

All of the performers do live in Las Vegas, and the cast is a magical combination. Their five voices are beautifully matched to the fun and saucy songs and to each other. This musical includes some spicy, fun and up to the minute lyrics which are tailored parodies of American standards.

In Divorce Party Las Vegas, Linda, who just embarked on the tumultuous journey herself, is packing up her life and getting ready to start over, with no idea how to do it. She is surprised by her big sister Carolyn, her cousin Courtney, and former college roommate Sheila. These ladies, being a bit more experienced in marriage, divorce and dating, decide to spend a couple of days helping Linda to accept her divorce, move on, and embrace her new found single status, with a divorce party!  They hire a hot masseur to relax Linda, a stylist to give her a fresh look…..in addition to a few other surprise visitors.

Of the song parodies featured in Divorce Party Las Vegas, two of my favorite are, Respect, which became D-I-V-O-R-C-E, and My Favorite Things, about the "miracle" of surgical cosmetic enhancements.

Kelly Ward is Linda, the soon to be divorcee, who has lost her mojo after her sixteen year marriage fell apart. Over the course of the weekend, she is “turned on” to a whole new world of dating and is intrigued as well as terrified. Kelly has shined in previous Las Vegas productions such as Nunsense and Hairspray.

Jacquelyn Holland-Wright, is the wise but sassy older sister Carolyn, who is smart enough to know that it will all pass and her little sister will survive and thrive. Her rendition of I’m A Cougar Hear Me Roar, rocks the house. Having seen Jacquelyn perform in the past I knew she would bring zest and sex appeal to the show, and she did. A former lead in Mamma Mia, and EFX previous to this she originated the role of Jocelyn in Soduko the Musical

Michelle Johnson is Sheila, Linda’s former college roommate. Her upbeat version of “Hair,” is comedic yet soulful and gives the song a whole new meaning. Michelle has performed on Broadway, national television, and much more. I saw her in a moving jazz performance last year, and there is no doubt as to why she is referred to as the “Las Vegas’ First Lady of Jazz.”

“Because this is a fairly new show, we were able to put a little more of ourselves into the creation of the characters than in some previous productions we have starred in.”  Robin Berry Vincent

Robin Berry Vincent as Courtney, is the sexy and high energy cousin who has been divorced multiple times. She is now experimenting with dating, her sex life and cosmetic surgery, and relishes living judgement free. Robin has wowed audiences before in Guys and Dolls, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and sultry live jazz performances.

Jeff Brooks, the one male in the show, plays various roles with hilarious results! Jeff, the only cast member not originally a local, recently moved to here from New York. “I got a phone call offering me the part and I was given two days notice to move to Las Vegas for this show. I had never even been here before. Living here since January, now I know there is a lot more to this town than just the strip!“Jeff’s talents were previously honed in productions such as Into The Woods, Chicago and Carousel.

Like many former and current productions successfully brought to Las Vegas, Divorce Party Las Vegas was trimmed down from its original length of just over two hours. The show now runs about 80 minutes and is packed with music, laughter, surprises, and multiple “OMG” moments.

Tim Bennett, Resident Director was previously the resident director in Las Vegas for the The Lion King, and other several other successful productions nationwide.

Michelle Johnson, Kelly Ward, Robin Berry Vincent, Jeff Brooks, Me, & Jacquelyn Holland-Wright, Ballys Windows Showroom
What makes Divorce Party Las Vegas such a welcome addition to the family of Las Vegas strip shows is not just the cast, music, and sexy sass, but that everyone leaves with something. Whether it be a few laughs at a situation in your own life that you couldn’t see the humor in before, or the thought of calling a friend who might need a divorce party of their own, it will make you smile (and maybe even hum a song parody on your way out!)....

Hollywood tips to look great at the pool or beach

This is an edited repost of one of my most popular posts!

Hollywood Tips to look great at the Pool and Beach

Model Renata Moise, Photo by Barry Gallegos....Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas
If we all looked like my friend Renata in swimwear, we'd be at the pool or beach every day of the summer!.....However, most of us don't.....(nor do we qualify for the Boston Marathon, which is how she earned her body). But the good news is, being a West Coaster for 18 years, I have learned some things. Below are a few tips that work for me.

First things first, a tote bag- Have a designated pool or beach bag with sunscreen, a towel, sunglasses, always at the ready to grab easily so you look pulled together. Best if it's a light color bag, cloth, some kind of weave texture, canvas, or even clear acrylic like the one below, which makes it easy to find things and are waterproof!

Sunglasses - Always wear sunglasses! It's good to have a special pair set aside that you don't use every day that always look good, unscratched and flattering. Plus, they're great for on top of your head after coming out of the water.

Make-up - Waterproof mascara and some lipstick or colored gloss make a world of difference. Best to  put sunscreen on your face before leaving the house. It will soften your skin which can give it a bit of a glow.

Hair- If your hair is clean and looks great, good for you! It may not last long in the heat, sun and water, however, so have a back up plan. Either wear a beach hat, (not a baseball cap, which causes guaranteed hat hair), or slick back your mane into a sleek ponytail with some light hold gel. Just because it's a ponytail doesn't mean it has to look like you just came from the gym. Or a "messy" bun, tip your head upside down, then back up, secure with ponytail holder, wrap hair around ponytail holder in a circle, stick in two bobby pins "wherever". Also, If you have shoulder length or longer hair it's easy to do your own loose side braid or side pony tail and leave a little bangs out to soften it up.

Lisa rockin' the wet head look! Rio Pool
Shoes - sandals are best, flip flops, wedgies, sling backs....a 1 - 3 inch heel is best. If you can't remember the last time you had a pedicure,  a little lotion and a quick quote of light toenail polish make a big difference in a pinch.

Both comfy & pretty, sandals rock!.. Voo Doo Beach, Rio Hotel
Jewelry - Minimal, but here is a trinket that looks great on all ladies....an ankle bracelet! You can get them at stores like Claire's Boutique in the mall, or the gold and silver by the inch kiosks. (The beach and pool are not the place for expensive jewelry). Most department stores also sells a nice selection.

Cover up- The beach and pool are a "no khaki zone". Swimsuit cover ups that are most flattering are summer dresses or skirts/wraps. A long wrap is best, more versatile. A simple summer dress long or short, light and breezy moves with you when you walk and feels light and airy. Shorts work too, but please no gym shorts, unless you are there to do something really athletic.

Heather of Beauty Kitchen, rocks a summer pool outfit with attitude! Thailand 2014...HeatherMarianna.tv

Sunscreen- Yeah I know blah blah blah wear sunscreen. I am actually a firm believer in this because sunburn happens SO fast and by the time you notice it is too FAR too late! Hawaiian Tropic has some great products and if you want a little "glow" you can use their spray oil, (if you want more coverage spray it over suntan lotion). Don't go crazy though nobody likes the oily look...especially in your cleavage area....slimy cleavage....not attractive. There are also a few new sunscreen products with a little self tanner combined in them, which I have not tried, but might.

To tan or not to spray tan- Trust me, nobody cares if you are tan or not. I have seen plenty of great looking people with no tan whatsoever "rock" a swimsuit. Also, the opposite is true. There is such thing as "too" tan....if you live at the beach we understand, you're forgiven. But if it's an overdone artificial tan then you just seem insecure. If you must spray tan to get yourself to the pool for the first time of the season, then get a light spray tan and after that you won't care. After all it's about relaxing and having FUN!

Swimsuit -No matter what your shape, size or AGE, nobody has to wear a "mom suit" this summer. Plenty of swimwear designers offer options that hold, cover and flatter. Whenever I see a woman in a mom suit it makes me think she is self conscious instead of celebrating the fact that she's out there in the sun and swim. (Unless it's a modesty issue but anyone ultra modest wouldn't be in a swimsuit in public). Oh, and nobody really notices about your cellulite, look close enough and you'll see, every woman has it...even the skinny minnies!

This suit has shirring (every woman's best friend), that hides any extra weight without being obvious, and if you have the opposite problem and are not curvy enough, it cinches your waist to give you a few!

With that said, please don't hide away because you don't feel "perfect".....go to the pool or beach and look around. Nobody there is flawless, but everyone there is having fun!
